Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live... -Isaiah 55:2-3
I suppose if you took this verse out of context, you'd have a pretty good argument for being fat. "Well, God told me to delight in fatness..." lol Now, I don't want to dwell on a food issue completely. I started this Bible study because this happens to be what I'm working on in my life right now. God cleans me up little be little and I work on things as I'm led. When I first rededicated my life to the Lord, He worked on my heart about the music I listened to. After a battle with my flesh, I ended up throwing out hundreds of cd's (over 300). I guess you had to be there to appreciate the momentousness (if that's a word) of the occasion. That's the first thing God cleaned up in my life and then little by little He keeps cleaning my life out of the things that get in my way of growing closer to Him. My eating habits happens to be what God is cleaning up on me right now. Really, though, you can take this idea and apply to anywhere in your life. What is it that is holding you back from a more intimate relationship with God? Do you skip church to go to your kids' sports games? Do you make up excuses for why you can't get up in the morning and do your devotions? Is tv more appealing than reading your Bible? There's a million things that the world throws at us to divert our attention from God. Have you ever heard of the term 'cannon fodder?' The story goes, (although I asked a historian about this and he said it most likely wasn't true) that in the revolutionary war the Americans had the first line of people who would run out and attack to draw the cannon fire toward them. They were the expendable ones. They would waste the ammunition of the British and deplete their resources. Obviously, what it ended up depleting was the American resources of fighting men. Are you cannon fodder? The world has a lot of stuff to throw at you. You're running out to draw the fire of the world and in the end it will deplete you. It's all expendable stuff. Don't waste our time on the expendable stuff. (Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. -Matthew 6:19-21). Are you wasting your time running after the world when you should be saving your resources for fighting the good fight? We 'labor for the things that don't satisfy.' Ultimately, if we're filling ourselves with junk food, the satisfaction goes away quickly and we have to fill ourselves with something else. It's fleeting and doesn't offer a permanent satisfaction - and I mean that in both a physical and spiritual sense.
God wants us to be fat in Him. He wants us to have delight in our lives. Listen to Him. Be filled with Him so there's no room for the other stuff.
Have a blessed week.
